Oak Grove, Minnesota 55011

New Golf Course Construction

Champoinship 18 hole public golf course
Project Cost: $3.2 million
Project completion: September 24, 2002

General Information

The Refuge Golf Club was developed and owned by Minnesota entrepreneur Rick Lund on 304 acres of land in Oak Grove, Minnesota. The site consisted of 45 acres of agricultural land, 100 acres of sedge-meadow wetland and 160 acres of woodland dominated by red oak, sugar maple and poplar. The course takes advantage of the site’s natural setting by meandering the golf holes around and over the existing wetlands and woodlands. To allow golf cart and maintenance vehicle access and to minimize wetland disturbance, over 1,900 lineal feet of 9 foot wide, piling- supported bridges and 19,400 lineal feet of 10’ wide bituminous cart path were utilized. Larger site elements such as irrigation ponding, the driving range and the clubhouse parking lot were sited in the existing open spaces previously under agricultural use. In 2002, the golf course was recognized by the Minnesota DNR Forestry Employees Association for its outstanding achievements in environmental stewardship.

Project Profile

Herfort Norby’s responsibilities included the design and management of all aspects of the project including wetland delineation, course routing, permit acquisition, site engineering, solicitation of bids and contract administration. Construction began in March of 2000 and was completed in September of the same year. The course opened for play on June 8, 2001 with green fees of $50.00.
